:)</div>

Long time no see! (well, same old, same old). We've been away from the blog but not from the middle ages. Truth be said, we've never been so much "connected" to the middle ages as we have been this summer. In the past two months we've been living in the village of Sundkøbing (aka <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Middelaldercentret-Nyk%C3%B8bing-Falster/391810524222456?ref=stream">Middelaldercentret Nykøbing Falster</a>). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Between paintings, lots of scribing, tablet weaving, looms, <i>et caetera et caetera</i>... this have been a wonderful and fulfilled summer. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will write more about the experience later, for now just a couple of photos!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Na outra rodela a representação do signo Aquário correspondente ao primeiro mês no ano. </div>

<i><br />First drawing/illuminure of the year! A calendar page of January for a Book of Hours, use of Rome (ca. 1400).</i><i>Along side the calendar with the month's festivities, January are generally represented by a feast. In this case, a variation of this scene shows a man with two faces representing the god Janus (ancient roman god of gates and doors, beginnings and endings) looking ahead to the new year and back to the old one at the same time.</i><i><br />On the other rondel, the representation of the zodiac sign of Aquarius.</i><br /><div>

Last illuminure of the year* - The Annunciation, based on an early 15th century Dutch Book of Hours. The "tiles" background is a very common type of background decoration during the 14th century, and it can be found in early 15th century manuscripts, although a more naturalistic type of background started to be more prominent. Personally I prefer the latter style, and this kind of tile painting is a huge time consuming process, but, allas no one can deny it has a more "trully" medieval aspect. :)</div>

A month without any post! That doesn't mean we have been lazy, but exactly the opposite. Last month we visited the public library of Evora where we had the chance to see in hands a couple of 15th century book of hours and an English manuscript from ca. 1450 which was offered to Afonso V, king of Portugal (1438-1481). To appreciate such pieces of medieval art in our bare hands it's an unique and remarkable experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On another and mostly surprisingly occasion, we saw for the first time a medieval "pocket calendar", a facsimile of the exemplar from Ljubljana Library (Slovenia). It's a rare document, not many medieval calendars have survived, and I couldn't resist myself to try and make one. The original is from 1415.</div>

The calendar has the name of the 12 months and a picture of the month's main labor in the fields. Along side with the months, each space has a smal graphic representing the average light and dark hours and also the corresponding zodiac sign. </div>

Another quick post to show an illuminure I've just finished, based upon a french Book of Hours (1st quarter of the 15 century). It is one of my favorite styles of manuscript decoration, but it takes lots of time to draw and paint, and a huge amount of patience! </div>

And now a quick jump to the early 13th century... My last request from a friend was to write a letter from the <i>alcaide</i> (municipal magistrate) of Algoso, a castle in northeast region of Portugal, to be delivered to the Archbishop of Toledo along with the arrival of portuguese troops to aid in the battle of <i>Las Navas de Tolosa</i> (1212), an important turning point in the iberian <i>Reconquista. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Originally there is no proof that such letter had ever been written, but the document will be presented to the archbishop in the arrival of portuguese participants in the event - the 800th anniversary of the <i>Las Navas de Tolosa</i>, by a group of friends who will attend the recreation of the battle in Spain. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgArRo7z_3SQ0d8dt7vbKlehJ4tpsNro_H7WmO9q-Sw7wcXZmTV3LTbxdkudGYfYkVhwplqj8b8A44ehhRvP0cB6SxfsvCOlxHp23rbui5RCu5bNb2-ibJu5oxFi8BSPJ_xOhQ3AyWFgk/s1600/DSC02885.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgArRo7z_3SQ0d8dt7vbKlehJ4tpsNro_H7WmO9q-Sw7wcXZmTV3LTbxdkudGYfYkVhwplqj8b8A44ehhRvP0cB6SxfsvCOlxHp23rbui5RCu5bNb2-ibJu5oxFi8BSPJ_xOhQ3AyWFgk/s400/DSC02885.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, a historical curiosity for our dedicated readers (we know who you are! :D). Until 1422 all documents in Portugal were dated with the Caeser Era, or Hispanic Era. In the beginning of the <i>Pax Romana</i> in Hispania, a new dating system was set and the year 1 of Caeser Era corresponds with 38 B.C. So, until late middle ages, the iberian kingdoms used this system, and Portugal was one of the last converting to the <i>Anno Domini</i> system by a royal decreet of King John I in August 22, 1422 (or, Era MCDLX).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For example, in the letter above, altough the battle was in 1212 AD, the document reads "written in Era (of Caesar) MCCL" - Era of 1250 (1212 + 38).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below, two original documents, the first from August 12, 1422 (before the royal decreet) in wich can be read in the last line "<i>era de mill & iiii xl anos</i>" (MIIIIXL) = Era of 1460 - and another from September 11, 1422 (after the royal decreet), in which can be read "<i>era da nascença de nosso senhor Jhu Xpo de mill e iiii xxii anos</i>" (MIIIIXXII) - Year of the birth of our lord Jesus Christ of 1422".</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
deitar, a rapariga chegou a candeia às penas do corvo; ele acordou logo, dando
um grande berro:</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i>- Ai, que me dobraste o meu
encantamento!
dizendo para a mulher:</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<i>Agora se me quiseres tornar a ver</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<i>Sapatos de ferro hás-de romper.</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i>A pobre rapariga ficou sozinha
O velho
respondeu:</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i>- Eu venho da fonte da
Madrepérola, onde estavam bastantes.</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i>Ela continuou o seu caminho, e
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i>- Olha, se quiseres salvar o rei,
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<i>A rapariga chegou á fonte, e fez
pôs obrigação de a servirem toda a vida</i>.</div>

Eram muitos bichos da seda. Muitos. Centenas?

From 24 to 28 of May we went back in time to 1402, this time not in Portugal but in a place we had long dreamed to visit: the Middelaldercentret in Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. The center is a european reference of quality and rigor in medieval living history, and beeing there is not difficult to understand why. <i>Tak</i> to everyone for welcoming us so well, and we are really looking forward to come back to Sundkøbing soon! :) </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
Figueiredo estão em <i>stand by</i>.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
HAH! QUERIAS! Eu estou bem aqui a comer folhas.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<i><span lang="en-US">Between</span>
medieval and 21st century projects and daily jobs, we have
more things to do than we can count, so some of them, like the
embroidery of “Figueiral Figueiredo” it's on stand by.</i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<i>One of the projects that can't wait
is the silk project.We've been given silkworms... many
silkworms...hundreds of silkworms! And these little fellows just want
to eat and eat and eat! Some of them are really big and we can't wait
for them to start making cocoons. It's too <u>many</u> mouths to feed
but it looks like they are joking with us. Bet they are thinking “a
cocoon?! HAH! YOU WISH! I'm fine eating leaves.”</i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
:)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nas próximas semanas iremos colocar as outras fases do projecto aqui no blog.</div>

<b><i>Figueiral Embroidery - Part I</i></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Our next long-term textil project will be the embroidery of a portuguese medieval song about a knight who saved 6 maidens that were about to be delivered to a mourish king (more about the legend in which the song is based later).</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>To start, we bought a cloth of white linen, and decided to dye it with some natural light color. After some research we chose to dye with almond tree leaves, and we hope to get a light shade of green.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>So the first steps in this project was to pick up the leaves on a nearby almond tree, and to leave them in water for some days to get the color.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Ana is already doing the drawings, and I'm training the embroidery so I can help with the work! :) </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>More to follow on the next weeks... </i></div>

</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><i>In order to show the different kind of textile crafts that I can make I decided to organize a portfolio. It's in this that the “Fingerloop Project” is inserted.</i></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><i>Inspired by the book “Tak V Bowes Departed”, which is based on a 15th century manuscript, I decided to make all the different laces shown in it. A total of 41 laces in fingerloop braiding.</i></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><i>In this particular case, I want these samples for personal use and NOT for reenactment purposes and my main concerne was that the laces would show the different braiding of the strands. With this in mind I chose to make the braids with a cotton thread.</i></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
